Child Playing Therapy
Child and Teen Adjustment Support Program

Our Child Adjustment Support program, led by Dr. Edan Alcalay—an experienced, well-trained child psychologist—helps kids navigate the move to a two-home family with confidence. Through age-appropriate, play-based sessions, we teach emotion naming, coping skills, and problem-solving, while guiding parents to create consistent routines across households. The result: calmer transitions, stronger communication, and children who feel safe, seen, and better adjusted in both homes.

Child & Teen Adjustment Support — Program Overview

Lead clinician: Dr. Edan Alcalay

Who it’s for

Children and teens are experiencing the transition to a two-home family due to separation or divorce. Appropriate for:

  • Kids showing anxiety, sadness, anger, school or sleep disruptions

  • Siblings with different coping styles

  • Parents seeking tools to reduce conflict spillover and create consistent routines across homes

What to expect
  • Individual child sessions (play- and talk-based): Emotion identification, coping skills, problem-solving, and perspective-taking, using age-appropriate methods (games, stories, role-play, CBT/ACT-informed tools).

  • Parent guidance (parallel, not couples therapy): Brief coaching to align house rules, transitions, and communication; guidance on language to use with kids; coordination with other professionals if needed (teachers, pediatricians, attorneys, GALs).

  • Two-home planning: Concrete plans for exchanges, school nights, holidays, and digital communication to give children predictability.

  • Progress checkpoints: Short reviews every 3–4 sessions to refine goals and measure gains.

Format & duration
  • Intake: 75–90 minutes (parent consult + child meet-and-greet).

  • Core track: 6–8 weekly sessions; extended as needed for complex cases.

  • Delivery: In-person and secure virtual options; sibling add-ons available.

  • Documentation: Summaries for parents; court-facing letters only if appropriate (this is a therapeutic, not forensic, service).

Benefits & outcomes
  • Emotional regulation: Kids learn to name feelings, self-soothe, and bounce back after tough moments.

  • Behavioral stability: Fewer meltdowns, smoother hand-offs, improved sleep, and school engagement.

  • Stronger communication: Scripts and routines that lower conflict and reduce triangulation.

  • Resilience & confidence: Children feel safe, seen, and capable in both homes.

Parent role
  • Attend brief coaching check-ins, practice shared routines, use the provided language guides, and update the team on changes (new schedules, legal orders, school issues).

When to start
  • Ideal at the front end of separation, or any time new symptoms or transitions appear (moves, schedule changes, re-partnering).

Why families choose this program
  • Child-centered and skills-based with clear milestones

  • Short-term, outcome-focused care that respects legal boundaries

  • Practical tools you can use immediately at home and during exchanges
